Being a realtor with a certified relationship background, I noticed a trend amongst couples buying their first “together” home. The process starts off fun and exciting, but out of nowhere comes an unexpected curveball.
Let me explain…
You and your honey have decided it’s time to take things to the next level and purchase your first home together. You both are so excited; you call your lender, get pre-approved, and then get in touch with your realtor begin your home search.
Your realtor gets you set up on a home search that meets the criteria you provided. You begin looking at homes, and it’s fun and exciting. The day was fun, but you didn’t see anything you loved. A few days later, you call your realtor so exciting to see a house that just popped on the market.
You walk into this house, and instantly you fall in love. In your mind, you already know that this is the one. As you walk through the house, you get even more excited, pointing out all of the fantastic features. You visually place your furniture—Voice what you would do with the basement. You are so ecstatic that you don’t even realize your spouse has been very quiet. However, your realtor did as soon as you walked in. She knew you loved, and your spouse didn’t. It would just be a matter of minutes before the fun bubble would be popped.
Once you realize that your spouse isn’t reacting the same way you are. You say, ” You don’t like it, do you? ” Your spouse confirms your suspicion, and now you’re angry. You ask your spouse in a defensive tone. Why? “Why don’t you like it?” you ask. Your spouse explains why, and that’s the moment you discover that you guys didn’t communicate your wants and needs efficiently. You didn’t discuss your non-negotiables as a couple. And now you’re angry because you just fell in love with this house. My goal is to prevent this from happening.
